Have you heard about the game 5 Second Rule? Maybe you've watched US talkmaster Ellen DeGeneres play the original game with famous guests like Adele, Jennifer Lopez or Melissa McCarthy on her talk show. Or maybe you've seen the funny videos on youtube. Object of the game is to give 3 answers within 5 seconds - before time is over. Watch one of the funny videos together with your students. Afterwards, surprise them and play this game in class.
This is how it works: Determine how many rounds will be played: for larger groups, play two to three rounds; for smaller groups, play four to five rounds. The host (teacher) reads a question aloud. All questions begin with “Name 3” followed by random categories. As soon as the question is read, start the timer. The player has now 5 seconds to give 3 answers. If a student says 3 answers before time is over, he gets one point. If the player is only able to name one or two answers before 5 seconds are up, they get no points and play moves to the next player. The next player then gets 5 seconds to try to answer the same question. The tricky part is that the new player cannot use any answers that were previously used.
In class, I use the website classroomscreen.com and upload the logo of the game as a background. This creates an atmosphere of being live on Ellen's talk show. Furthermore, this website has a stopwatch – set it to 5 seconds, adjust the sound. Now, you are ready to start the game. Simply print the following info sheet – it contains 100 sample questions, as well as a link with more questions. There it is, another great way to improve your students’ talking skills.
